Hey everyone! I am a total newbie, I played once, and Im so hooked. I want to buy a gun soon b/c it will actually be cheaper for me in the long run. I don't know what kinda gun to get. I like to play in the woods but would also like to play speedball eventually.

How does this work? Do you buy a paintball pistol then add on to it until it becomes a sniper rifle? Why do the pros look like they all use the same kind of gun? Is there a place to learn about this stuff from the very bottom up?

What would be optimal would be something I can adjust for woods to speedball thats priced right for a beginner. Any tips?

If you peruse the section called what paintball gun should I get, you'll learn a fair amount about what it takes to buy a new or used pb gun.
If you check that section out, then have some specific questions, post up! but its a good starting place.
I play ball a fair amount at New Breed in North Jersey, where did you play your first time?

NJPC has the best playing fields in the area. That was the first fields I played too, back in the day. That's SERIOUS woodsball, and those rocks and boulders! You won't find many fields as good as NJPC. I love the ridges on Lake field. Predators Den is one of the best! They also run the game pretty well, most fields are less organized and less safety minded.
ABC is small, with only two woods fields and probably their airball field is up by now but it could be hard to get games on it. The refs there are old time players, (they knew NJPC days), so they try to make the games good.
Paintball Depot is near also, it's got more fields and they're bigger than ABC (and better) but they tend to stock low grade paint and weird pricing. The entry to most of the fields is up a huge hill, which can slow things down.
That's one thing that NJPC does that I liked- takes you up for four games instead of just two. I actually learned how to be a tinkerer because I hated the idea (and fact) of sitting out a game because of gun troubles. I would sooner (and I did) pull back and fix my gun in a bunker than walk off a field. If the gun wasn't working at game on, I'd run out with the broken gun and try to fix it in the game, or wait for someone to get eliminated and trade guns!
New Breed is literally right around the corner from NJPC, on Macopin Road. Instead of turning off Macopin at that pizza place, you continue straight for 200 feet and make a right into New Breed (and camp grounds).
New Breed is Bring your own Paint, and that's pretty much the only reason we go there. It DOES have two very good woodsfields, almost as good as any NJPC field, but it's main attractions are an okay castle field and a fun JunkYard field (fun until you play it 8 times in a day and don't move to another field...) It's the complete opposite of NJPC in how the field gets run, but it's improved somewhat in terms of turning games over. When we have enough guys that we think are fun to play with, my team usually will take a group up to the deep woods and play 4-6 games on the honor system. Those are the most fun because they really are NJPC style woods fields.
We're looking into this field in Flemington called MotoxFarms, which has good prices, and looks like fun. Otherwise those are the main North Jersey fields.
Farther north is Liberty Paintball, which is a great place. Strategy Plus in Ct. is a really great field too.
I'd love to get a game up at NJPC, but their pricing structure and no-walk-on policy makes it very difficult to get my guys to line up for it.
We've been playing a lot at On Target paintball, which is in SOUTH Jersey, which is a haul to get to, but the fields are great and the price is good. BYOP too.
Out in Long Island is High VElocity 2, which is a great field, though a little expensive on normal days.
Also out there is the original Cousin's Paintball at Coram, which is good old school woodsball. Closer to NYC is Cousin's in Staten Island, which is not bad for a day, but only has 5 fields.
Oldbridge has Fireball Mountain, which wasn't well organized or safe last time I went, but may have changed.

Budget is the key to what kind of gun and gear you can get. It's not just about the gun, it's also about the goggles, air supply, and hopper.

I don't recommend going full bore crazy when you're a newb. I think, getting a gun that's accurate enough is all you want for now. Many players start up with guns that are way beyond their skill level, and they develop the skills that those guns excel in, like rapid fire shooting, instead of accuracy. They learn to shoot more than they learn to play the game and move around. A lot of players forget that it IS a game, that the game is as important as shooting the other guy out. Sometimes all you need to do is sneak around and get the flag to win, but instead if you don't develop those skills, you get stuck in head-on firefights with others who don't know about the game.

Next time you go, let me know and maybe we'll get a chance to shoot each other. Hey also I'm getting rid of tons of gear, so if the timing is right, I can give you some stuff, if not maybe you can pay shipping...

Thanks so much for all your help! If you end up having stuff to spare I would definetly be interested. I am trying to plan an outing to ABC Paintball with a couple of coworkers so I can't really go all out with these guys and have to kind of wear my professional hat but I would totally like to meet you up some other time. If you can I was already planning on going again in Dec by myself. Maybe we can meet up. Thanks again. Heres my email to keep in touch.
